Longest wharf The wharf is 1500m long and more than twice as long as the wharf frequently claimed to be the longest at Tolaga Bay. This is a mere 660 metres long and was built in 1929 to allow shipping to access the relatively shallow bay.
Who built the Tolaga Bay wharf?
It had silted up by the end of the First World War, when moves to establish a freezing works and reluctance to pay rates for Gisborne’s harbour works revived local interest in a port. Marine engineer Cyrus Williams drew up plans for a 100-m wharf connected to the shore by a 500-m jetty.

In 1894 the first New Brighton Pier was opened and for the next 70 years it provided the citizens of Christchurch with a recreational destination in the traditional British style.
