When can you use a Young Persons Railcard?
As the name suggests, the Railcard is only available for people aged between 16 and 25. However, you can also apply for one if you’re a mature student in full-time study, as long as you’re eligible.
Can you use a 16-25 Railcard when you’re 25?
Yes. You can buy or renew your 1-year 16-25 Railcard up to and including the day before your 26th birthday and keep using it until its expiry date. With 3-year 16-25 Railcards you can buy them up until the day before your 24th birthday, which will make the expiry date the day before your 27th birthday.
Can you use a Young Persons Railcard at peak times?
Can I use a 16-25 Railcard at Peak times? Yes, you can use your 16-25 Railcard during Peak hours. However, please bear in mind that between the hours of 04:30 and 10:00 from Monday to Friday a minimum fare of £12 applies (apart from during August and July, where the minimum fare isn’t in action!)
Can I use my Railcard for a friend?
No. The Railcard is for your use only, and provides discounts only on tickets bought for your own use. It does not cover anyone accompanying you.
Can I use my Network Railcard before 10am?
Network Railcard discounts are not valid on tickets for travel before 10.00hrs, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). This time restriction applies to all types of tickets. You can use your Network Railcard to get discounts on tickets for travel at any time on weekends and public holidays.
Do students get free Railcards?

Are Railcard photos strict?
We prefer colour pictures but black and white images are acceptable. Your head and shoulders should be in close-up, with your face clearly visible and filling approximately 70% of the frame (in the same way it would for a passport or driving licence). The image must be in sharp focus.
Can I use my friends family and friends Railcard?
Yes. You must show your valid Family & Friends Railcard (digital or plastic) when you buy your ticket and travel on the train. Failure to present a valid Railcard will mean you have to pay a full fare, which is not refundable.
Do I get a youth discount with a Railcard?
Young persons’ railcard discounts are available for many rail operators via Rail Europe. However, you don’t always need a railcard to obtain a youth discount, but you may need to prove your age on board the train. In addition to standard youth discounts, further discounts may be available for young travellers with a railcard.
